OK So I have neglected the blogosphere again. But here I am on this Friday morning trying to catch you up a little, on my happenings and new paintings.I have been so inspired by old books and magazines lately. About a year ago I picked up a couple of life magazines from the 40's and finally got around to using them. I absolutely love the old advertisements. So here is my first installment. There were some very dark times in our history, but I love the way that advertising was used to bring up the mood of households.

This past couple of weeks have been crazy busy....but I love it! Any way I have had a very difficult time heading to the computer. Last week I hung all of my work over at Sno Road winery in Echo. This gave me no work for the Saturday market. I have been painting like crazy. Here are three of my new works, there are more pictures to come, but I thought I would just post a few at a time.

I am playing around with recycled materials, so on my way to Home Depot the other day I thought I would stop by the flooring store, and see what they had for interesting supplies. Turns out if their flooring gets damaged, or broken, it gets tossed. Wow, every week all of those floor boards, get tossed! Home depot does it too. I talked to the gentleman at the floor store here locally and he is willing to give me broken pieces for art. So here it is, the first piece I am working on, with recycled flooring.

Sitting here in this quiet moment, painting and listening to music, there is a feeling that bubbles up inside of me. This is a time that doesn't catch up with me often. The kids are still asleep the animals are fed, the sun is shining through the curtains and I have all of me ducks in a row to just sit and paint. Take the time today to take a hold of those quiet moments, and listen...You never know what you might hear

Just a pile of PVC no way this is a hose powered squirt gun to squirt your Kids. Last picture tired of the squirt gun drill a few more holes in the tip and you have a nice tool to water your plants.

Balance

Today I am quietly, pondering balance. After a very long week of nothing other than preparations, I didn't have time to paint, and my house is a disaster area. Since I have started up my business again (after a three year break... more on that later), I am feeling the crazy, red headed, art monster coming on. We joke around a lot here about mom going into her hare brained art mode, but seriously it's not really a joke. I can get extremely consumed with whatever it is that I am doing, which kind of puts everything else in neglected mode.
So today I clean the house, it is in dire need of my attention along with my kiddos. In fact I may just grab a hose and go to town on both. I am seeking balance, I would like to be able to do everything, paint, clean the house, spend time with the kids, exercise, eat right, put on make up everyday, blog, and read my bible. more things are actually on that list, but those are just the first that come to mind. I WAS ASKED TO DO A RECYCLE PROJECT AND HERE YA GO. I HAVE A LOT OF PAPER THAT I WOULD PUT IN THE TRASH BUT INSTEAD TO DAY WE HAD A LITTLE FUN AND MADE A PAPER AIRPLANE AND IT’S A FLIER.

New Framing

Yesterday I framed the sweety bird painting. I am so excited about how it turned out. I put 2.75 inch sides, and covered them in the same vintage papers that I have on the front. I think I am going to do some more framing like this, I love the look of the deeper sides.

So there you go make something out of something unexpected, and then either send me a picture or send me a link in the comment box. This can be a song if you play something recycled, it can be writing anything you would like, OK go and create. Next Sunday I will post pictures of mine as well as your links and pictures.

How to build an artist panel

Here is a painting that I need to frame and ship this week.
Most of my paintings are on Birch plywood
The sides are radiata pine
1.) Measure each side of the painting
2) Measure your pine
3.) I usually cut just slightly big and sliver a little off (my husband frowns on this practice).
4.) Using wood glue put a little along the side of the pine, I even it out with my finger and then put it on the painting.
5.) Clamp the pine onto the painting
6.) It is easier to do one side at a time.
7.) Wait 30 minutes in between sides

8.) Use wood filler and sand sides to give a smooth appearance

There you have it, a beautiful panel to paint your masterpiece on. You can also use Masonite for your painted surface, the only draw back is that it tends to be less durable than birch. On larger painting I nail the sides. If I frame before I paint I also nail through the top, counter sink, and fill.

In life sometimes it is so hard to discover "who you are" and what you are "meant to be." Whether your an artist, seamstress, writer, musician or just a all around creative person, We all want to feel like we stand out, that there is something that makes us stand out from the crowd. That we have a voice.

Many years ago when my kids were small, and my house was a mess (it still is by the way).I used to dream about being a famous artist, having my work up in large galleries and painting masterpieces.
I have gotten past this now and tapped into my creative spirit.I no longer have a need to be famous, I just have a need to create.

1. Just do something: Turn on your favorite music and put some paint on the canvas, Start sewing,break out some paper and write. Try not to worry so much about the end result, enjoy the process.Sometimes we get so caught up it editing, and the fear of critique that we are crippled.

Art is a collaboration between God and the artist, and the less the artist does the better.

2. Use words: Journaling is one of my favorite pastimes, for a writer and a musician these are part of the everyday process. Including my thoughts and feelings in the backgrounds of my paintings has opened new doors for me. when it comes to discovering myself through my art using words and poetry has given a voice to what is normally silent.

3.Be a kid again: have some fun, try not to take yourself to serious, use colors where they don't belong, sometimes I'll paint the sky red, I use colors in shadows,do something unexpected. Who knows, you may surprise yourself.

4. Don't get stuck in one medium: years ago I started with watercolor, I was always so uncomfortable with the results. I wanted to use ink and acrylics but at that time it was against the "cardinal watercolor rules" so I cheated, and you know what, the watercolor police never arrived at my doorstep.

5.Trust yourself: Don't follow the rules, this is art.
One day my son David came home from school and told me he "hated his art class" when asking him how on earth, he could possibly, "hate" art, he told me that his teacher kept telling him he was doing it "all wrong". Are you kidding me?.... I'm sorry but as we have learned from art history the progression of art has been all about "breaking the rules." THIS IS ART, it's not math. Break the rules and follow your instincts. Trusting yourself is so important. in order to stand out, you have to be yourself.

Farmers market

This was week two at the Farmers Market and the sun was shining. Over the last three years I haven't done much showing of my work, and to tell you the truth I really miss it. Living in a small town has been great for our family, we have met some wonderful people here. Recently I have discovered the beautiful culture in this town, and the Farmers Market is one of them. The smells of yummy food, beautiful fruits and veggie's, and really great people. I have been very lucky to be right next to the live music, which has been predominantly Blue Grass. I never knew that I enjoyed Blue Grass, but I'll tell you my foot was tapping (who knew.)
